Frequently Asked Questions UniUte Ute Accessories Australia

FAQs

Fitment & Compatibility

Do your products fit my ute?

All UniUte accessories are vehicle-specific — engineered for your exact make, model, year, and in some cases grade. Canopies, roller shutters, hard lids, sliding trays, and tub mats are all listed by vehicle. Check the product page for the year range and grade notes before ordering. If you're unsure, call us on +61 3 9939 5047 or visit our contact page and we'll confirm fitment for your exact vehicle.

Why do you list accessories by vehicle rather than selling universal fit?

Because universal fit accessories don't fit properly. A roller shutter or hard lid that isn't engineered to your exact tub dimensions will have gaps, won't seal correctly, and may not lock securely. We don't stock universal covers for products that should be vehicle-specific. The extra work of engineering to each vehicle's dimensions is what makes the fitment clean and the product work properly.

What's the difference between the Toyota Hilux N80 and N90?

The N80 ran from 2015 to 2025 and the N90 launched in 2026. They have different tub dimensions — accessories engineered for the N80 will not fit the N90 correctly, and vice versa. Always check your vehicle's build year before ordering. Browse the full Toyota Hilux accessories range or contact us if you're unsure which generation you have.

My ute has a factory sports bar — will a roller shutter still fit?

Yes, in most cases. We stock sports bar adapter kits for popular vehicles including the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton. The adapter kit allows the roller shutter to mount over the sports bar without modification. Check the product listings for your vehicle or call us to confirm compatibility with your specific sports bar configuration.

Can I fit a roller shutter and a canopy on the same ute?

Not at the same time — a canopy encloses the full tub height, which means a roller shutter cannot be fitted simultaneously. Most owners choose one or the other. If you want enclosed height storage, choose a canopy. If you want tub access with security and weatherproofing, choose a roller shutter. Contact us if you're unsure which suits your needs.

Will a sliding tray fit under my roller shutter or canopy?

In most cases yes — sliding trays sit on the tub floor and most roller shutters and canopies have sufficient clearance. However clearance depends on the specific canopy or shutter brand and model. Contact us with your canopy or shutter make and model and we'll confirm compatibility before you order.

Does the tri-fold hard lid fit all grades of my ute?

Most hard lids fit all dual cab grades of a given model, but there are exceptions. For the Toyota Hilux N80 for example, the SR Workmate grade uses a different tub rail profile to the SR5 — we stock separate hard lids for each grade. Always check the grade notes on the product page. When in doubt, call us.

Products

What is the difference between a Gen1, Gen2, and EGen2 roller shutter?

Gen1 is the original manual roller shutter design. Gen2 is the updated manual version with improved slat design and sealing. EGen2 is the electric version — it opens and closes via a switch or remote with no manual effort. The EGen2 is the most popular option for daily drivers and tradies who want convenience. Browse our full electric roller shutter range and manual roller shutter range. All three versions use the same T-track side rails and are compatible with our crossbars, ladder racks, and sports bar adapter kits.

What is the load rating on your hard lids?

All UniUte tri-fold and quad-fold hard lids are rated to 250 kg static load. You can stand on them, stack gear on top, or carry equipment on the lid surface. Dynamic load rating while driving is lower — always secure loads to prevent movement in transit.

What is the load rating on your sliding trays?

UniUte sliding trays are available in two ratings: the plastic deck tray is rated to 300 kg and the aluminium checker plate deck tray is rated to 400 kg. Choose the aluminium deck if you regularly carry heavy equipment, work in demanding environments, or want maximum durability.

What is the difference between a fibreglass canopy and a stainless steel canopy?

Fibreglass canopies are lighter, can be painted to colour-match your ute, and offer a factory-fitted appearance that suits lifestyle and touring builds. Stainless steel canopies are heavier but significantly more durable — they won't crack, dent, or corrode and are built to handle decades of hard daily use on worksites and farms. Most lifestyle and touring buyers choose fibreglass. Most tradies, farmers, and heavy commercial users choose stainless steel.

What is a ProLift tailgate assist and do I need one?

A ProLift is a gas strut kit that mounts between your tailgate and the vehicle body, slowing the tailgate as it opens so it eases down in a controlled motion instead of dropping under its own weight. Benefits include preventing hinge and cable wear, protecting cargo from the impact of the tailgate dropping, and allowing one-handed tailgate operation. It's a bolt-on install with no drilling. Most owners who fit one say it's one of the best value accessories on the ute.

What does tailgate central locking do?

Tailgate central locking integrates your tailgate into your vehicle's existing central locking system. When you lock your ute with the key fob, the tailgate locks along with all other doors. It's particularly useful when combined with a roller shutter — locking both the shutter and the tailgate gives you maximum tub security.

What is the REVOLVER tonneau cover?

The HR REVOLVER is a premium hard rolling tonneau cover made from interlocking aluminium slats — similar in security to a roller shutter but with a rolling mechanism that opens from the rear of the tub rather than rolling into a front canister. It locks at any position along the bed, is fully weathersealed, and has a matte black finish. Popular for owners who want hard cover security with a low-profile tonneau aesthetic.

What are bash plates and what do they protect?

Bash plates (also called skid plates) bolt underneath the vehicle to protect the engine sump, gearbox, transfer case, and fuel tank from rock strikes and debris on off-road tracks. UniUte stocks 3mm mild steel and 6mm aluminium bash plate kits for the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Navara NP300.

What is the difference between a roller shutter and a hard lid?

A roller shutter offers better security — the full-width locking mechanism is harder to force than a hard lid. A hard lid offers a 250 kg load rating on top, meaning you can stack gear or stand on it, which a roller shutter doesn't support. Both clamp on with no drilling. Choose a roller shutter for security and weatherproofing; choose a hard lid for load-carrying and aesthetics. Still not sure? Read our Roller Shutter vs Hard Lid vs Tonneau Cover guide.

Installation

Do you offer professional installation?

Yes. UniUte has an in-house workshop at 37A Capella Crescent, Moorabbin VIC 3189. We professionally fit everything we sell — canopies, roller shutters, sliding trays, hard lids, tow bars, side steps, bash plates, and more. We do multiple installations every working day. Call ahead on +61 3 9939 5047 to book and confirm lead times. Learn more about our workshop.

Can I install these products myself?

Most UniUte accessories are designed for clamp-on or bolt-on installation that doesn't require drilling to the vehicle. Roller shutters, hard lids, tonneau covers, tub mats, side steps, and rail guard caps can all be fitted by a competent DIYer with basic tools. Canopies, tow bars, and bash plates are more involved and we recommend professional installation.

How long does canopy installation take?

A canopy installation at our Moorabbin workshop typically takes a half to full day depending on the canopy type and vehicle. Fibreglass canopies generally take longer than stainless steel due to the additional sealing and mounting work involved. We recommend booking your installation appointment in advance — contact us to arrange.

Can I book installation at the same time as ordering?

Yes — you can purchase online and book installation separately, or call us to arrange both at once. We recommend calling if you're ordering a canopy so we can discuss lead times and book a fitting appointment that suits your schedule. Contact us here.
