A Mitsubishi Delica D5 lift kit can increase ground clearance and change the way the vehicle sits, but suspension lifting is not simply a matter of adding height. A lift can also affect wheel alignment, CV-joint angles, suspension travel, steering geometry, tyre clearance and overall vehicle behaviour.
UniUte does not currently sell a Delica D5 lift kit. This guide is intended to help Delica owners understand the main lift-kit types, the checks that matter before modifying the suspension, and the Australian compliance issues that should be considered before installation.
What Does a Delica D5 Lift Kit Do?
A suspension lift raises the vehicle by changing the relationship between the body, suspension and wheels. Depending on the design, this may be achieved with replacement springs, spacers, dampers or a combination of components.
The main practical reason for lifting a Delica D5 is normally to gain additional ground clearance or create more room for an approved wheel-and-tyre combination. However, extra lift can also change suspension geometry and driveline angles, so more height is not automatically better.
What a Lift Kit Does Not Do
A lift kit does not automatically increase the Delica's legal payload, GVM or axle capacities.
It also does not automatically improve:
- load-carrying capacity;
- on-road stability;
- braking performance;
- steering response;
- vehicle reliability;
- resale value.
Those outcomes depend on the complete suspension design, tyres, alignment, vehicle load and how the modification is engineered and approved.
Main Types of Delica D5 Lift Kits
Spring Lift
Replacement coil springs can raise ride height while also changing spring rate. The correct spring specification should match the actual vehicle weight and intended use rather than being selected on lift height alone.
Strut or Spring Spacers
Spacers can raise ride height without replacing every suspension component. They may be less complex than a complete suspension kit, but they still change suspension geometry and available travel and should be selected specifically for the Delica D5.
Complete Suspension Kit
A complete system may combine springs, dampers, spacers and other components designed to work together. The advantage is that the parts can be matched as a system rather than mixing unrelated components.
The exact contents vary between manufacturers, so always check what is included and whether additional alignment or geometry correction parts are required.
How Much Should You Lift a Delica D5?
There is no single lift height that is best for every Delica D5.
Before choosing a height, consider:
- the exact Delica D5 year and variant;
- front and rear suspension condition;
- CV-joint and driveshaft angles;
- available suspension droop and compression travel;
- steering and alignment adjustment range;
- wheel and tyre size;
- clearance around brake hoses, ABS wiring and other components;
- local vehicle-modification rules.
A mild lift may be enough for an owner who wants modest extra clearance, while a larger change can require additional engineering and supporting modifications.
Delica D5 Lift Kit Fitment: 2006–2019 vs 2019+ Facelift
The Delica D5 changed significantly with the 2019 facelift. Do not assume a suspension kit listed for an earlier D5 will automatically fit a facelift model.
Before buying any lift components, confirm:
- model year;
- 2WD or 4WD/AWD configuration where relevant;
- engine and drivetrain variant;
- front and rear suspension specification;
- whether the kit manufacturer explicitly lists your exact vehicle.
CV Angles and Driveline Considerations
Raising an independent-suspension vehicle changes the operating angle of the CV joints and other driveline components. Excessive operating angles can reduce available movement or increase stress on joints and boots.
Australia's VSB 14 suspension guidance specifically notes that driveline and CV-joint operating angles and axial movement must remain within design limits through the full range of suspension travel.
For that reason, lift height should be assessed as part of the complete suspension and driveline system rather than as a cosmetic measurement alone.
Wheel Alignment After a Lift
Any suspension-height change can affect wheel alignment.
After installation, the vehicle should be checked for:
- camber;
- caster where adjustable;
- toe;
- steering-wheel position;
- tyre clearance through full steering lock;
- clearance through suspension compression and extension.
If the required alignment cannot be achieved within the available adjustment range, additional approved components or a different suspension setup may be necessary.
Tyre Size and Lift Height
A suspension lift and larger tyres both contribute to total vehicle-height change.
Do not assume that fitting a lift kit automatically makes any larger tyre legal or mechanically suitable. Tyre diameter, wheel offset, clearance, speedometer accuracy, load rating and local modification rules all need to be checked separately.
Does a Lift Improve Delica D5 Off-Road Capability?
A correctly engineered lift can increase clearance beneath parts of the vehicle and may reduce the chance of contacting some obstacles. It can also create additional room for an approved tyre setup.
But off-road capability also depends on:
- tyre choice and pressures;
- traction;
- approach, departure and break-over clearance;
- suspension travel;
- drivetrain protection;
- driver technique;
- vehicle load.
A larger lift can also raise the vehicle's centre of gravity, so the trade-off between clearance and handling should be considered carefully.
Australian Lift-Kit Rules and VSB 14
In Australia, suspension modifications are governed by national technical guidance together with state and territory registration requirements.
The Australian Government's Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 (VSB 14) provides the national code of practice for light-vehicle modifications.
Section LS of VSB 14 states that a vehicle-height increase of up to 50 mm overall may be possible without certification where the stated conditions are met. That total can include suspension lift, body lift and tyre-diameter changes, so individual modifications cannot be considered in isolation.
VSB 14 also requires relevant steering, suspension and driveline components to remain within their design limits.
State and territory requirements still apply. The Australian Government directs owners to their local registration authority for final requirements.
Victorian Owners: VicRoads and VASS
For Victorian vehicles, VicRoads vehicle-modification guidance states that owners should check compliance before making changes and that some modifications may require a Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) approval certificate and inspection.
If you are unsure whether a particular Delica D5 lift requires certification, confirm the proposed suspension and tyre combination with VicRoads or a VASS engineer before purchasing or installing the components.
Other Australian States and Territories
Rules can differ between jurisdictions. Before modifying a Delica registered outside Victoria, check the requirements of the relevant state or territory registration authority.
Do not rely only on a supplier's statement that a kit is “legal” without confirming that the complete vehicle setup complies in your jurisdiction.
Insurance and Roadworthiness
Suspension modifications can affect roadworthiness and insurance obligations.
Before installation, it is sensible to:
- confirm the modification complies with the applicable registration rules;
- keep invoices and documentation for the suspension components;
- retain any engineering or approval certificates;
- inform your insurer where required by your policy.
DIY or Professional Installation?
Suspension work affects steering, braking geometry and vehicle control, so professional installation is the safer choice unless you have the correct equipment, technical knowledge and access to alignment facilities.
A proper installation should include checks of:
- fastener torque;
- spring and damper seating;
- brake-hose and ABS-wire clearance;
- CV and driveshaft movement;
- steering through full lock;
- suspension travel;
- wheel alignment.
Lift Kit Maintenance
After installation, follow the suspension manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Recheck mounting hardware where specified and inspect components after rough-road or off-road use.
Watch for:
- uneven tyre wear;
- new vibration or driveline noise;
- damaged CV boots;
- loose fasteners;
- contact between tyres and bodywork;
- changes in steering or braking behaviour.

Delica D5 Lift Kit Checklist
Before buying a lift kit from any supplier, confirm:
- exact Delica D5 year and drivetrain;
- kit compatibility with your vehicle;
- intended total lift height;
- tyre-size contribution to total vehicle-height change;
- CV, steering and suspension geometry;
- alignment adjustment range;
- state or territory approval requirements;
- whether engineering certification is required;
- installer experience with Delica D5 suspension.
The most useful lift is not necessarily the tallest one. A well-matched setup should provide the clearance you need while keeping suspension, driveline, steering and regulatory requirements within acceptable limits.
