What Does a Winch Rating Mean?
A winch's rated capacity (expressed in pounds or kilograms) is the maximum single-line pull on the first layer of rope on the drum. This is important because the pull capacity decreases as more rope is spooled out and layers build up on the drum — each additional layer reduces pull force by approximately 10–15%.
The general rule for winch sizing is: choose a winch rated at 1.5x the gross vehicle mass (GVM) of your vehicle. For a Toyota Hilux with a GVM of approximately 3,000 kg (6,600 lb), that means a minimum 9,000–10,000 lb rated winch.
Synthetic Rope vs Steel Cable
This is the most important choice after rated capacity.
Synthetic Rope
Synthetic rope (usually Dyneema or similar UHMWPE) has become the preferred choice for most 4WD enthusiasts and is standard on premium winches like the ComeUp range.

- Safe — stores very little energy when under tension, so if it snaps it falls to the ground rather than whipping back with lethal force

- More susceptible to abrasion on sharp rocks — use a rope protector over the fairlead contact point

Steel cable is more abrasion resistant than synthetic rope and less susceptible to UV degradation.
Advantages:
- More abrasion resistant on rough surfaces
- Doesn't degrade with UV exposure
- Lower initial cost
Disadvantages:
- Dangerous when it snaps — stores enormous energy and can whip back with lethal force
- Heavy and difficult to handle, especially in cold or wet conditions
- Develops kinks and sharp wire splinters with use
- Sinks in water crossings
The verdict: For Australian 4WD use, synthetic rope is the safer and more practical choice for the vast majority of owners. Steel cable is only preferable in applications involving constant abrasion against sharp rock faces where rope durability is the primary concern.
12V vs 24V Winches
Most dual-cab utes and 4WDs run a 12V electrical system, making a 12V winch the standard choice for the Australian market. 24V winches are typically used on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment with 24V systems.
Unless your vehicle specifically runs a 24V system, choose a 12V winch.

Do I Need a Bull Bar to Fit a Winch?
Yes — in almost all cases. A winch needs a mounting platform rated to handle the pull force, which a standard factory bumper cannot provide. A bull bar or winch bar with a winch mounting cradle is the correct way to fit a winch to an Australian dual-cab ute. The winch bolts to the cradle in the bar, which distributes the load through the vehicle's chassis.
Fitting a winch directly to a factory plastic bumper is not safe and not recommended.

- Snatch block — doubles your pulling power and allows directional changes. Essential.
- Tree trunk protector — protects trees and anchor points when using a static anchor
