Bash Plates for Utes — What They Do and Which One to Choose

UniUte |

If you take your ute off-road — seriously or occasionally — bash plates are one of the most important protective accessories you can add. Australian tracks are hard on the undercarriage of any vehicle, and a single rock strike in the wrong place can mean a cracked sump, a broken gearbox casing, or a punctured fuel tank. Bash plates prevent exactly that. This guide covers what bash plates do, what to look for, and which vehicles UniUte's range fits.

What Are Bash Plates?

Bash plates (also called skid plates) are heavy-duty steel or aluminium plates that bolt underneath your vehicle to protect critical mechanical components from rock strikes, debris, and ground contact. They sit between the terrain and the engine, gearbox, transfer case, and fuel tank — the most expensive and vulnerable parts of any 4WD.

What Do Bash Plates Protect?

A full bash plate kit typically covers:

  • Engine/sump — protects the oil sump from rock strikes. A cracked sump means immediate engine oil loss and potential engine seizure.
  • Gearbox — protects the transmission casing from impacts.
  • Transfer case — on 4WD vehicles the transfer case sits low and is particularly vulnerable.
  • Fuel tank — a punctured fuel tank in a remote location is a serious safety and logistics problem.
  • Steering and suspension components — some kits include additional coverage for front control arms and steering rack.

Steel vs Aluminium Bash Plates — Which Is Better?

3mm Mild Steel

Steel bash plates are heavier but extremely tough — they absorb impacts through deformation rather than cracking, which means they can take significant punishment before needing replacement. They're the preferred choice for serious off-road use, rock crawling, and farm tracks with sharp granite or ironstone. The trade-off is added weight, which can slightly affect fuel economy and handling.

6mm Aluminium

Aluminium bash plates are lighter than steel (typically 30–40% less weight for equivalent coverage) and don't rust — an advantage in coastal or wet environments. 6mm aluminium provides excellent protection for most recreational 4WD use and touring. The trade-off is that aluminium can crack under extreme point impacts that steel would absorb, so very serious rock work still favours steel.

Which should you choose?

  • Rock crawling, serious off-road, farm tracks — 3mm steel
  • Touring, gravel roads, occasional off-road — 6mm aluminium
  • Coastal environments, weight-sensitive builds — 6mm aluminium

Do Bash Plates Require Professional Installation?

Most bash plate kits are designed for DIY installation — they bolt to existing factory mounting points underneath the vehicle using the hardware provided. A basic understanding of working under a vehicle (jack stands, safety) is required, but no specialist tools or fabrication is needed. Installation typically takes 1–3 hours.

Will Bash Plates Affect Ground Clearance?

Bash plates do reduce ground clearance slightly — typically by 10–20mm depending on the kit. However they also protect the components that previously defined your lowest point (the sump, gearbox casing) — so in practice they allow you to safely drive over terrain that would have been off-limits without them. The net effect on usable off-road capability is positive.
