Steel vs Aluminium Bash Plates — Which Is Better?
3mm Mild Steel

They're the preferred choice for serious off-road use, rock crawling, and farm tracks with sharp granite or ironstone. The trade-off is added weight, which can slightly affect fuel economy and handling.
6mm Aluminium
Aluminium bash plates are lighter than steel (typically 30–40% less weight for equivalent coverage) and don't rust — an advantage in coastal or wet environments. 6mm aluminium provides excellent protection for most recreational 4WD use and touring. The trade-off is that aluminium can crack under extreme point impacts that steel would absorb, so very serious rock work still favours steel.

Do Bash Plates Require Professional Installation?
Most bash plate kits are designed for DIY installation — they bolt to existing factory mounting points underneath the vehicle using the hardware provided. A basic understanding of working under a vehicle (jack stands, safety) is required, but no specialist tools or fabrication is needed. Installation typically takes 1–3 hours.
Will Bash Plates Affect Ground Clearance?
Bash plates do reduce ground clearance slightly — typically by 10–20mm depending on the kit. However they also protect the components that previously defined your lowest point (the sump, gearbox casing) — so in practice they allow you to safely drive over terrain that would have been off-limits without them.
